A sneak into the life different from ours.......RAINBOWS IN THE DARK
RAINBOWS IN THE DARK :
In that torquoise coloured room, not much spacious, 15 to 20 kids were waiting for us, sitting in a circle . Out of those small flowers , one child in the corner of room caught my attention. He was propelling his hand boat in the air as in the water. It was like out of those flowers ,there was one which was swinging and dancing in the air. He was just playing regardless of our existence. After his imaginary and dreamy boat ride he started conversing with himself by taking his own name, that was bit comical. He was shantanu ,about 7-10 years old , wearing small red and yellow coloured soiled shirt ,short hair , running nose and he was wiping it with his sleeves . We gave them books , colour boxes , chocolates. I was standing near the door and looking that shantanu and his friends were busy in unwrapping the chocolates , that moment was really satisfactory and gratifying for me , I captured that in my mind.
Often physically and mentally challenged children are made subjects of sympathy. We should remember that a physically or mentally challenged child has rights too and more than sympathy, the child requires our empathy. More often than not, physical and mental disability is considered a curse in society. The families of such children treat them as a burden. But we forget that these children have special needs which we need to fulfill. What the law says about discrimination of differently abled children is Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 ensures equal opportunities for people with disabilities and provides education, employment and vocational training for them.It is considered that around 150 million children in the world live with a disability; 80% of them live in developing countries. Most often, these children do not receive necessary treatment and most of them are discriminated. The Convention of the Rights of people with disabilities adopted in the year 2006, defines a disability as:
“Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. Shantanu is one of them .
World mental health day is a day for global mental health education and awareness . It was first celebrated in 1992 by world federation for mental health , a global mental health organization . This day thousands of supporters come and celebrate the annual awareness program to bring attention to mental illness and it's effect on people's life.
Now what we have to do is , show them confidence, and faith , show them that they are not different , support their passion , give complement and appreciate them . We have shared few hours of our life with them . Let us pledge to take a step , go and spend a day with them, make them feel special and on the contrary we will be the once who will feel special and grateful to the almighty for bestowing us with his countless blessings .
